Despite ranking far lower than other teams in power rankings, the Toronto Raptors are receiving a lot of love when it comes to Over/Under betting for the upcoming NBA season.
Tiff Perkins-Simmons
After the Raptors selected Collin Murray-Boyles first in the June NBA draft, Kendrick Perkins stated on ESPN that he believed the team will be a Top 6 seed in the Eastern Conference this season. This statement sparked a well-publicized feud between Simmons and Perkins last month.
"Do I take this samurai sword and jam it into my temple or I do take this chain saw and saw my leg off,” Simmons said on his podcast in June. “They took Collin Murray-Boyles. Perk said they have the pieces, and they are a Top 6 team in the East. At that point I started looking for a third ESPN channel. But there are only two covering the draft.”
No Raptors' love there, then. Perkins retaliated against Simmons because he didn't like the remarks.
Raptors Drop on the Power Chart
The Raptors are ranked about 24th in the current NBA power rankings. However, others believe they are an East playoff team.
BetMGM claims that bettors perceive anything different there. According to statistics made public by the sportsbook, the Raptors win 97% of bet overs in tickets (37.5, at -120) and 99% of bet overs in handling.
The Charlotte Hornets (25.5) and the Chicago Bulls (32.5) are included in the handle of most bet overs, as are the Los Angeles Clippers (48.5) and San Antonio Spurs (43.5) in the tickets.
The majority of bet unders? The Cleveland Cavaliers (56.5), Indiana Pacers (38.5), and Bucks in handle, and the Boston Celtics (43.5), Milwaukee Bucks (43.5), and New Orleans Pelicans (30.5) in tickets.
The Effect of Ingram
Even though 37.5 wins isn't much to celebrate, bettors are undoubtedly excited about where the Raptors are with training camp still two months away. Brandon Ingram, a 27-year-old NBA All-Star who the Raptors acquired in a trade with the New Orleans Pelicans last February and promptly re-signed to a contract deal, is largely responsible for that zeal.
Despite missing the entire previous season due to an ankle injury, Ingram is healthy for this season, and a lot of the excitement around the Raptors stems from the possibility that the gifted Ingram would mesh well with Scottie Barnes, the team's other star. In July, Ingram declared that the Raptors will "definitely" make the playoffs.
Ingram, a former Most Improved Player, has averaged 19.5 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 4.3 assists in 495 NBA games during his career with the Lakers and Pelicans.
Barnes is a power forward, Ingram is a small forward, Immanuel Quickley is a point guard, R.J. Barrett is a shooting guard, and Jakob Poeltl is a center on the Raptors' current depth chart.
A Boston Celtics team without Jayson Tatum (torn Achilles) for the season, a Philadelphia 76ers team without Joel Embiid and Paul George, the Bucks without Damian Lillard (released), and the Indiana Pacers without Tyrese Haliburton (torn Achilles) are also factors that those bettors who are excited about the Raptors are taking into consideration.
